Update on School Tax
Veteran's Exemption Status

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH OTHER VETERANS IN RED HOOK. This statement below is posted on the Red Hook Central School District's web site. While it is apparent that the vote for or against the exemption will not happen for this tax year deadline, it is important that the School Board hear from Veteran's living in the School District. If anyone is interested in attending, the next school board meeting is at the K-2 library at Mill Road School, Wednesday, Feb 26 from 7-8pm.

Veteran's Property Tax Exemption
The Red Hook Central School District Board of Education recently became aware of the possibility of offering a property tax exemption to certain veterans. While as a group we are deeply appreciative of the service that the veterans have provided to us and to our country, we believe that the complexities involved in the decision to offer the exemption call for more discussion than can be had before the March 1, 2014 deadline. Perhaps the most significant issue involved in offering the Veteran’s Property Tax Exemption is how to measure the impact to the remaining taxpayers since the savings for veterans that is created by the exemption would be shifted as an additional tax burden to those who do not receive the exemption. In order that all voices can be fully heard on this issue we plan to take the additional time necessary for that discussion to occur. We hope to conclude those discussions and reach a final decision on this matter over the next few months. We welcome input at any of our regularly scheduled Board of Education meetings.

PLEASE NOTE: Senator Gipson has formed a
Veterans Advisory Committee to assist him
in helping veterans in his district.
Contact Richard Wambach, the VFW 7765 liaison on
the committee if you have any issues to bring before
the Senator for NYS legislative action.

Check with your school district to see how they will vote on this legislation and attend their board meetings to give input as a veteran!

Vietnam War 50th Anniversary

The Department of Defense Department has begun a project to pay
tribute to the nation's Vietnam War veterans. At the
center of the
project is the website
"50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration", which will serve as a clearinghouse for information
on the war once it is fully functional this spring. The new website will chronicle facts, provide educational materials and offer resources for
a commemorative partners program, which will offer guidance and
materials for organizations to conduct their own Vietnam War commemoration activities.

Constitution of the Veterans of Foreign Wars

The objectives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars are
Fraternal, Patriotic, Historical and Educational;
To preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members;
To assist worthy comrades;
To perpetuate the memory and history of our dead,
And to assist their widows and orphans;
To maintain true allegiance to the Government
of the United States of America,
And fidelity to its Constitution and laws;
To foster true patriotism;
To maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom;
And to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies,

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
